  3.     The story about our book, After the Ball (BEHAVIOR, July
  4. 10), though generally excellent, appeared under a headline
  5. stating that it "urges homosexuals to tone down and blend in."
  6. This has generated considerable anger and misunderstanding. We
  7. certainly do not advocate that gays disappear into the woodwork.
  8. Rather, the gay community should tone down and stand up 1) by
  9. coming out of the closet and 2) by supporting a bold national
  10. media campaign that corrects old stereotypes. The public image
  11. of gays may indeed be moderated as a result of such increased
  12. visibility, since straights will then find that the vast
  13. majority of gays are as conventional as they are. But
  14. heterosexuals will never come to realize this if homosexuals
  15. continue to lead their otherwise ordinary lives in the closet.
